Steve Perry is a renowned singer of the band Journey, a songwriter, and a musician.
He was brought up by Portuguese parents who both came from the Azores. They both lived in Hanford, California, at the time he was born.
His father, Raymond Perry, who worked as a vocalist, inspired his interest in music from a tender age.
His parents, unfortunately, separated when he was eight years old. As a result, his mum relocated to his grandparent’s farm.
His interest in becoming a singer immediately sparked after listening to the song “Cupid” by Sam Cooke when he was 12 years old.
In high school, Perry actively participated in music and became a drummer. He would drum for the school’s marching band as well as extracurricular bands.
Perry later proceeded to the College of Sequoias, where he joined the choir and sang as the first tenor.
Career
Steve Perry began to pursue his music career in his early 20s after moving to Sacramento. He met Scott Matthews, who was then 16 years old, and started a band named Ice.
The band, however, disbanded after unsuccessful attempts to secure a music deal with a production company.
He would later form and join other subsequent bands along his music career. In 1975, he formed Pieces, a progressive band that later disbanded.
He moved to Banta, California, where he joined the band Allen Project as a singer. Unfortunately, the band’s bassist passed away in a road accident. Perry left the band, ready to give up on music, and moved back to his home in Lemoore.
He would later resurface after meeting Walter Herbert, the manager of the band Journey, who finally convinced him to join the band. This band became the epitome of his music career.
