Doreen Lioy was born in Burbank, California, in the year 1955. While she was growing up, her family life was that of an average middle-class family. As a young adult, Lioy began working for the popular magazine Tiger Beat as a magazine editor. During her time as an editor, Lioy became close with the family of John Stamos.
Stamos would go on to recall this friendship, telling ET Online of the odd friendship. Stamos would state that Lioy met him through a friend who introduced the two. He was 16 or 17 years old and was starting to take his career in acting and the entertainment business more seriously.
Stamos stated that Lioy “groomed him” and helped make him famous. She was the first to feature him on Tiger Beat, which helped propel his career. However, the family friendship would end after Lioy began courting her future husband, serial killer Richard Ramirez.
Doreen and Ramirez
Doreen Lioy would become known as the wife of the serial killer, “Night Stalker,” Richard Ramirez. Lioy first met Ramirez during his trial, where she would attend his court proceedings in earnest. She began writing him letters, over 75 of them, rather quickly. Once the two became close, she would visit him, often being seen visiting Ramirez up to four times per week.
Ramirez would eventually propose to Lioy, and they would marry in 1996. The wedding would take place at the San Quentin Prison, the prison where Ramirez was serving his sentence and awaiting execution. In 1997, Lioy would be interviewed by CNN, stating of Ramirez, “He’s kind, he’s funny, he’s charming… I think he’s a great person. “He’s my best friend; he’s my buddy.”
Marrying Ramirez would turn Lioy into a loner, as most of her family and friends would go on to disown her. Doreen would proclaim her love and belief in her husband, accepting the fact that she would live alone and never have children, though she originally wanted five or six.
Her new dream was to love Richard. It’s stated that when people would approach her, admonishing her for her marriage to a convicted killer, she would roll her eyes and state, “Hometown girl makes bad.”
